Triathlon postponed due to water quality


 

The men’s Olympic triathlon planned for Tuesday has been postponed over concerns about water quality in Paris' Seine River, where the swimming portion of the race was supposed to take place.

Organizers said they will try to hold the men's triathlon Wednesday instead. The women’s competition is also scheduled on Wednesday, but both are subject to water tests. A risk of storms in the forecast for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings could complicate rescheduling the events.

Summer McIntosh wins Gold for Canada



Not so long ago at her Ontario elementary school, Summer McIntosh and her peers would practice singing the Canadian national anthem in both English and French.

They would break it down into thirds.

So when she stepped onto the medal stand at the Paris Olympics on Monday night after winning the 400-meter individual medley and "Oh Canada" began to play, that is exactly how the smiling teen sang — a portion in English, followed by a stretch in French and then English again.

Denico Autry suspended



Houston Texans defensive lineman Denico Autry has been suspended six games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drugs policy.

"Over the course of my 10-year NFL career, I have never engaged in the use of performance-enhancing drugs ... I was, therefore, stunned this offseason when I learned that one of my tests returned a positive result," Autry said in a statement, via NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Lions sign Decker


 

Detroit Lions left tackle Taylor Decker has signed a three-year contract extension, general manager Brad Holmes announced Monday on 97.1 FM, according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.

The deal is reportedly worth $60 million, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Packers sign Love


 

The Green Bay Packers are signing quarterback Jordan Loveto a record four-year extension worth $220 million, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

With the reported deal, Love ties Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals and Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars as the highest-paid quarterbacks in NFL history in average annual salary ($55 million).

Love's new contract also includes a record $75-million signing bonus and $155 million in full guarantees, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 25-year-old is now signed through the 2028 season.

Nuggets sign Westbrook


 

The Denver Nuggets and veteran guard Russell Westbrook agreed to a two-year, $6.8-million contract, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Westbrook's deal includes a player option for the 2025-26 campaign, adds Charania.

The Los Angeles Clippers dealtthe former MVP to the Utah Jazz last week in a sign-and-trade for Kris Dunn.

Orioles acquire Eflin


 

The Baltimore Orioles acquired right-hander Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays, the team announced Friday.

Tampa will get infielder Mac Horvath, right-hander Jackson Baumeister, and outfielder Matthew Etzel in return.

Eflin is under contract for $18 million next season, the final campaign of a three-year, $40-million deal.

Dolphins sign Tagovailoa 4 Years

 


The Miami Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa have agreed to terms on a four-year, $212.4-million extension, the quarterback's agency told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The deal includes $167 million guaranteed, Schefter reports.

Tagovailoa's $53.1-million average annual value ranks third among all quarterbacks, per. He trails only the Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrowand Jacksonville Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence, who are both on deals averaging $55 million per season.

Flyers sign Konecny


 

The Philadelphia Flyers signed winger Travis Konecny to an eight-year contract extension with an average annual value of $8.75 million, the team announced Thursday.

Konecny will be Philadelphia's highest-paid player when the new contract kicks in for the 2025-26 season. He's currently set to ride out the final season of a six-year deal that pays him $5.5 million annually.

Sabres sign Luukkonen


 

The Buffalo Sabres rewarded goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for a breakout season with a five-year contract carrying an average annual value of $4.75 million, the club announced Wednesday.

Luukkonen, who was a restricted free agent, grabbed the Sabres' starting job and exceeded expectations in 2023-24. He went 27-22-4 with a .910 save percentage and five shutouts across 54 games, suiting up for 21 more contests than he played in the previous campaign.

Pacers sign Nembhard


 

The Indiana Pacers signed Andrew Nembhard to a three-year, $59-million contract extension, his agents told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Indiana will reportedly decline his $2.2-million team option for 2025-26, allowing the new deal to start next season, adds Wojnarowski.

The 6-foot-5 guard will earn $18.1 million in 2025-26, $19.6 million in 2026-27, and $21 million in the final season of his contract, per ESPN's Bobby Marks.

Oilers hire Stan Bowman as GM


 

The Edmonton Oilers named Stan Bowman as their new general manager Wednesday, the team announced.

Bowman was reinstated by the NHL on July 1 after previously being banned for his role in the Chicago Blackhawks' 2010 sexual assault scandal.

He oversaw three Stanley Cups during his time with the Blackhawks in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Bowman resigned in 2021 after an investigation into the sexual assault scandal.

Orioles open to trades



The Baltimore Orioles are open to discussing trades for veterans Cedric Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Mountcastle, who was taken in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft, is the longest-tenured player on the Orioles. The 27-year-old has hit 12 home runs with 43 RBIs and 44 runs across 90 games over the 2024 campaign and has developed into a quality offensive player with a career OPS+ of 114. The first baseman is under club control for another two years.

Mullins, 29, has spent his entire seven-year career in Baltimore. The outfielder has 10 home runs, 32 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 90 contests this season. He made his only All-Star Game appearance in 2021, winning a Silver Slugger the same year. Mullins is arbitration-eligible for the final time in 2025 and will hit free agency at the conclusion of that campaign.

Jaguars sign Campbell 4 Years


 

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced they've signed cornerback Tyson Campbell to an extension Tuesday.

The four-year deal is worth $76.5 million and includes $53.4 million guaranteed, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Campbell, 24, becomes the highest-paid non-Pro Bowl cornerback in league history, per Rapoport.

Blue Jackets hire Evason as Head Coach


 

The Columbus Blue Jackets named Dean Evason their new head coach Monday.

Evason, 59, spent parts of five seasons as the bench boss of the Minnesota Wild, amassing a 147-77-27 record. He was fired on Nov. 28 and replaced by John Hynes.

Xander Schauffele wins British Open


 

Xander Schauffele's first two rounds at The Open this week came in the same group as Tiger Woods. That prompted the media to ask the PGA champion if Woods passed along any messages as he attempted to chase down his second major title of the season.

"No, you have to win these things to get a text from him," Schauffele responded.

On Sunday, Schauffele secured both a congratulatory message from Woods and the Claret Jug, as a sizzling final-round 65 vaulted the American to a two-shot win over Justin Rose and Billy Horschel.

Kershaw season debut


 

Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw will make his 2024 debut against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday, manager Dave Roberts announced Saturday.

Kershaw has been out for the entire 2024 campaign after undergoing shoulder surgery last November. The 36-year-old re-signed in the offseason with the Dodgers on a one-year, $10-million contract with a player option for 2025.

Max Fried lands on injured list


 

The Atlanta Braves placed left-hander Max Fried on the 15-day injured list with left forearm neuritis, the team announced Sunday.

Fried's IL stint is backdated to July 18.

The 30-year-old hurler hasn't pitched in a regular season game since July 11, although he did pitch one frame in the All-Star Game on July 16.

Mike Trout close to returning


 

Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout could return to the lineup for Thursday's game against the Oakland Athletics, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.

Trout will face live pitching at the Angels' spring training complex in Arizona and is expected to start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday, Bollinger adds.

The 32-year-old has been out of action since April 29 and underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee on May 3.

Tiger Woods shot 79-77 over two rounds at Royal Troon to tie his worst career 36-hole score in a major championship, according to the Twenty First Group's Justin Ray.

"Well, it wasn't very good," Tiger said after his Friday round. "I made a double there at 2 right out of the hopper when I needed to go the other way. Just was fighting it pretty much all day. I never really hit it close enough to make birdies and, consequently, made a lot of bogeys."

Woods' total of 156 tied his performance from the 2015 U.S. Open and put him ahead of only five players on the leaderboard when his day was over.

Reds sign Chase Burns


 

The Cincinnati Reds agreed to an MLB draft-record $9.25-million signing bonus with second overall pick Chase Burns, Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline reports.

Burns officially turned pro Thursday by inking his deal with the Reds.

Joe Bryant passes away


 

Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, the father of the late Basketball Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, has died, his alma mater announced Tuesday.

Bryant, who spent eight seasons in the NBA with three different franchises, was 69. The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing La Salle coach Fran Dunphy, reported that Joe Bryant recently had a massive stroke.

Bears sign Williams $39M


 

The Chicago Bears are signing No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williamsto a four-year, fully guaranteed deal worth $39 million, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Williams' rookie contract reportedly includes a $25.5-million signing bonus.

The 22-year-old was the consensus top selection in the 2024 NFL Draft following a standout career at USC. Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, accounted for 93 touchdowns across two seasons with the Trojans.

Ingrid Andress drunk during National Anthem

Tiger Woods rips into Montgomery


 

It's safe to say that Tiger Woods disagrees with Colin Montgomerie's recent comments suggesting that the 15-time major champion should call it a career.

"Well, as a past champion, I'm exempt (at The Open) until I'm 60," Woods said Tuesday. "Colin's not. He's not a past champion, so he's not exempt. So he doesn't get the opportunity to make that decision. I do."

He added, "When I get to his age (at 61), I get to still make that decision, where he doesn't."

Kings sign Byfield 5 Years


 

The Los Angeles Kings are signing forward Quinton Byfield to a five-year extension with an average annual value of $6.25 million, the club announced Monday.

The 21-year-old appeared in 80 games last season, recording 20 goals and 35 assists while averaging 16:29 of ice time. All four marks set new career bests.

He joins Anze Kopitar and Alex Frolov as the only players in Kings history to post 20 or more goals in a season at 21 years old or younger.

Teoscar Hernández is the dinger king of 2024.

The Los Angeles Dodgers slugger claimed this year's Home Run Derby in dramatic fashion at Globe Life Field, besting Kansas City Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. 14-13 in the final round to claim the $1-million prize.

Witt nearly pulled it out after a slow start to the final round, reaching 11 with a late flurry on his final pitches of regular time. He crushed two more after getting down to his final out in the bonus round and sent a third blast to deep left-center only to see it clank off the wall and give Hernández the title.

Spain spoiled England's hopes of ending its 58-year trophy drought after Mikel Oyarzabal scored late to beat the Three Lions 2-1 and win Euro 2024 in Berlin on Sunday.

Nico Williams and Cole Palmer traded goals in the second half before Oyarzabal's strike in the 86th minute secured Spain's record fourth European championship.

MacIntyre wins Scottish Open


 

Robert MacIntyre sank a 22-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the Scottish Open by one stroke over Adam Scott.

He's the second player from Scotland to win the event, joining Colin Montgomerie who was victorious in 1999, per PGA TOUR Communications.

Uruguay beats Canada



Luis Suarez tied the score two minutes into second-half stoppage time, and Uruguay beat Canada 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw on Saturday night to finish third in the Copa America.

Porter pleads guilty in gambling scandal


 

Former NBA player Jontay Porter on Wednesday pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a federal criminal case tied to the betting scandal that got him banned from the league earlier this year.

The former Toronto Raptors center entered the plea at his arraignment in a New York federal court and was set to be released on bond of $250,000.

His lawyer had previously said that Porter was cooperating with authorities while being treated for a gambling addiction.

NBA signs media deal


 

The NBA has agreed to terms on its new media deal, an 11-year agreement worth $76 billion that assures player salaries will continue rising for the foreseeable future and one that will surely change how some viewers access the game for years to come.

A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that the networks have the terms sheets, with the next step being for the league's board of governors to approve the contracts.

Tyler Glasnow on injured list


 

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Tyler Glasnow is going on the 15-day injured list due to back tightness, manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday, according to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.

Roberts added that Glasnow's injury flared up while the right-hander was playing catch Sunday.

The Dodgers hope it's a minor issue. Roberts said Glasnow could be able to return shortly after the All-Star break.

Penguins hire Wes Clark


 

The Pittsburgh Penguins hired Wes Clark as vice president of player personnel on Tuesday.

Clark will oversee Pittsburgh's amateur, professional, and free agent scouting departments. He previously worked under Kyle Dubas with the Toronto Maple Leafs and OHL's Soo Greyhounds.

Cameron Sutton suspended


 

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton was suspended without pay for the first eight games of the 2024 season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, the league announced Monday.

Sutton won't appeal the suspension, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. He will be eligible for reinstatement on Oct. 29 during Pittsburgh's Week 9 bye. The team visit the Washington Commanders in Week 10.

Alonso returns to HR Derby


 

The Polar Bear will be at the Home Run Derby.

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso threw his name into the hat for the Midsummer Classic's home-run competition, MLB announced on Sunday.

The two-time Home Run Derby champion joins Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson and Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm as participants, with more to be named before the event takes place.

Will Crosby re-sign with Penguins


 

The Pittsburgh Penguins and captain Sidney Crosby are closing in on a contract extension, sources told The Athletic's Rob Rossi.

Khyree Jackson killed in car crash


 

Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson and two of his former high school teammates were killed in an early morning car crash Saturday in Maryland, police and the team said.

Jackson, 24, and Isaiah Hazel died at the scene, while Anthony Lytton, Jr., was pronounced dead at a hospital after the three-car crash in Prince George’s County, according to Maryland State Police. Lytton was 24 and Hazel was 23.

Blackhawks sign Levshunov


 

The Chicago Blackhawks inked 2024 second overall pick Artyom Levshunov to a three-year, entry-level pact Saturday.

His contract carries a cap hit of $975,000 plus an additional $3.25 million in performance bonuses, per PuckPedia.

Red Wings land Tarasenko


 

The Detroit Red Wings signed Vladimir Tarasenko to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $4.75 million, the club announced Wednesday.

Tarasenko was arguably the best unrestricted free agent remaining.

The 32-year-old is fresh off winning the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers. It was his second championship in five years after he helped the St. Louis Blues win it all in 2019.

The Seattle Kraken made history Wednesday by tabbing Jessica Campbell to join head coach Dan Bylsma's staff.

Shohei Ohtani to skip HR Derby


 

Shohei Ohtani won’t participate in the Home Run Derby on July 15 despite the Japanese superstar ranking second in the majors with 27 homers for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ohtani has taken part in the Derby just once, exiting in the first round in 2021 at Coors Field in Denver. This year’s event is at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Panthers re-sign Lundell


 

The Florida Panthers signed forward Anton Lundell to a six-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.

The contract has an average annual value of $5 million, TSN's Chris Johnston reports. Lundell was a restricted free agent.

Lundell, 22, tallied 13 goals and 35 points last season. He added three goals and 17 points in 24 playoff contests en route to winning the Stanley Cup.

LeBron James signs huge deal with Lakers


 

LeBron James is putting pen to paper.

The free-agent forward is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-year, $104-million max contract, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

His new deal contains a no-trade clause, Wojnarowski adds. It also reportedly includes a player option for 2025-26, potentially setting up James to enter free agency again next summer.

Springer goes deep to beat Astros


 

George Springer hit a three-run home run against his former team, Spencer Horwitz added a solo homer and the Toronto Blue Jays held on to beat the Houston Astros 7-6 on Tuesday night.

Yordan Alvarez homered and scored twice as Houston almost came back from a 7-0 deficit, but the Astros lost for just the second time in their last 12 games.

José Berríos (8-6) pitched five innings to win back-to-back starts for the first time since a three-start winning streak between April 8 and 20. The right-hander allowed five runs and five hits.

Blues re-sign Buchnevich


 

The St. Louis Blues signed forward Pavel Buchnevich to a six-year contract extension carrying an average annual value of $8 million, the club announced Tuesday.

Buchnevich has one season left on his current deal at $5.8 million, per CapFriendly.

The Russian winger tied for second on the Blues in both goals (27) and assists (36) while ranking third in points this past season. He posted 26 tallies and 41 helpers across only 63 contests in 2022-23 after establishing career highs with 30 goals and 46 assists in 2021-22.
