Seattle Kraken hire Jessica Campbell



The Seattle Kraken made history Wednesday by tabbing Jessica Campbell to join head coach Dan Bylsma's staff.

Campbell will be the first-ever full-time female assistant coach on an NHL bench and only the second full-time female assistant coach in league history.

Shohei Ohtani to skip HR Derby


 

Shohei Ohtani won’t participate in the Home Run Derby on July 15 despite the Japanese superstar ranking second in the majors with 27 homers for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ohtani has taken part in the Derby just once, exiting in the first round in 2021 at Coors Field in Denver. This year’s event is at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Panthers re-sign Lundell


 

The Florida Panthers signed forward Anton Lundell to a six-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.

The contract has an average annual value of $5 million, TSN's Chris Johnston reports. Lundell was a restricted free agent.

Lundell, 22, tallied 13 goals and 35 points last season. He added three goals and 17 points in 24 playoff contests en route to winning the Stanley Cup.

LeBron James signs huge deal with Lakers


 

LeBron James is putting pen to paper.

The free-agent forward is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-year, $104-million max contract, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

His new deal contains a no-trade clause, Wojnarowski adds. It also reportedly includes a player option for 2025-26, potentially setting up James to enter free agency again next summer.

Springer goes deep to beat Astros


 

George Springer hit a three-run home run against his former team, Spencer Horwitz added a solo homer and the Toronto Blue Jays held on to beat the Houston Astros 7-6 on Tuesday night.

Yordan Alvarez homered and scored twice as Houston almost came back from a 7-0 deficit, but the Astros lost for just the second time in their last 12 games.

José Berríos (8-6) pitched five innings to win back-to-back starts for the first time since a three-start winning streak between April 8 and 20. The right-hander allowed five runs and five hits.

Blues re-sign Buchnevich


 

The St. Louis Blues signed forward Pavel Buchnevich to a six-year contract extension carrying an average annual value of $8 million, the club announced Tuesday.

Buchnevich has one season left on his current deal at $5.8 million, per CapFriendly.

The Russian winger tied for second on the Blues in both goals (27) and assists (36) while ranking third in points this past season. He posted 26 tallies and 41 helpers across only 63 contests in 2022-23 after establishing career highs with 30 goals and 46 assists in 2021-22.

Predators land Stamkos


 

The Nashville Predators signed longtime Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos to a four-year contract worth $8 million per season.

"When I became (general manager) of the Predators, I said many times that I was looking to add 'serial winners' to our franchise, and there is perhaps no one who fits that mold more than Steven Stamkos," executive Barry Trotz said in a statement.

Hedman re-signs in Tampa


 

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed defenseman Victor Hedman to a four-year contract extension with a $8-million cap hit beginning next season, the team announced Tuesday.

Hedman will be 34 when the deal kicks in next summer. He's entering the final campaign of an eight-year pact signed in 2016 that has a cap hit of $7.875 million.

Sam Reinhart re-signs with Panthers


 

The summer's top unrestricted free agent isn't going anywhere. 

The Florida Panthers re-signed star forward Sam Reinhart to a maximum-term eight-year extension with a $8.625-million AAV, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Reinhart enjoyed a monster regular season in which he scored 57 goals - including a league-leading 27 tallies on the power play - and 94 points in 82 games. His production was helped along by his 24.5 shooting percentage, the highest in the NHL.

76ers land Paul George


 

The Philadelphia 76ers and free-agent forward Paul George have agreed to a four-year, $212-million contract, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The deal includes a player option for 2027-28, Wojnarowski adds.

The Los Angeles Clippers, George's former team, stated Sunday that there was a "significant" gap in contract negotiations and that the nine-time All-Star wasn't expected to return to the club.

Clippers re-sign Harden


 

The Los Angeles Clippers will re-sign guard James Harden to a two-year contract worth $70 million, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

The contract reportedly features a player option in the second year.

Harden joined the Clippers via trade in November following a disagreement with Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey which prompted Harden to demand a move. In 76 games in L.A., the 34-year-old averaged 16.6 points and registered 8.5 assists per game as the team finished fourth in the West with a 51-31 record.
