Shohei Ohtani with a brilliant performance


Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani came within four outs of throwing the first no-hitter by a two-way player in MLB history.

Ohtani's bid ended when Oakland Athletics outfielder Conner Capel hit a single with two outs in the eighth inning during Thursday's game. The A's haven't been no-hit since 1991.

Maple Leafs sign Rasmus Sandin


The Toronto Maple Leafs ended their contract stalemate with restricted free-agent defenseman Rasmus Sandin, signing him Thursday to a two-year pact with an average annual value of $1.4 million.

Sandin suited up for a career-high 51 contests in 2021-22. He potted five goals - good for second among all Maple Leafs defenders - and 11 assists while averaging almost 17 minutes of ice time per contest.

Tua Tagovailoa taken to hospital with injuries


Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was stretchered off the field in the second quarter of Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 24-year-old is conscious and has been taken to a local hospital with head and neck injuries.

Tagovailoa's head appeared to hit the turf after he took a sack in the second quarter. He battled back and ankle ailments this week and had been listed as questionable for Week 4.

Blue Jays clinch playoffs


The Toronto Blue Jays are heading to the postseason for the second time in three years. 

The Blue Jays punched their ticket to the playoffs after the Baltimore Orioles' 5-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday.

Toronto remains in a tight race with the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners to secure the AL's first wild-card spot.

Tua Tagovailoa expected to play vs. Bengals


Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is expected to play Thursday night against the Cincinnati Bengals despite back and ankle injuries, sources told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Tagovailoa was listed as questionable but said Tuesday he was hoping to play. The signal-caller suffered the injuries in last Sunday's win over the Buffalo Bills.

It's a night of records for the New York Yankees, as the club also has a new co-leader for the single-season strikeout record.

Gerrit Cole notched his 248th strikeout of the season, equalling Ron Guidry for the franchise record set back in 1978. The tying K came against Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Raimel Tapia in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday at the Rogers Centre.

Aaron Judge hits home run #61


Aaron Judge belted his 61st home run of the year to tie Roger Maris for both the American League and the New York Yankees' single-season record Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.

Tua Tagovailoa questionable vs. Bengals


The Miami Dolphins officially listed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as questionable for Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, according to Adam Beasley of Pro Football Network.

Tagovailoa's been battling back and ankle injuries this week. He would've been a limited participant Wednesday if the team had held a full practice instead of a walkthrough.

The 24-year-old said Tuesday that he was hoping to face Cincy, adding that his back injury is his biggest issue.

Zach Wilson cleared to play


New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is medically cleared to play in Week 4, head coach Robert Saleh announced Wednesday.

Wilson is expected to start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelersbarring any setbacks.

The 23-year-old has yet to play this season due to a knee injury. He underwent surgery after suffering a meniscus tear and bone bruise in the preseason opener.

Cardinals clinch NL Central


The St. Louis Cardinals secured a postseason berth for the fourth consecutive year after clinching their fifth NL Central title in the last 10 years with a 6-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night at American Family Field.

Yankees clinch AL East


The New York Yankees officially clinched the AL East, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 at the Rogers Centre on Tuesday.

The 95-59 Yankees will now hold home-field advantage in the ALDS after earning a first-round bye in the postseason. Yankee Stadium will host Games 1, 2, and, if necessary, 5.

The win marks the Yankees' first time finishing atop the AL East standings since 2019 and only second since 2012.

John Tavares out with oblique strain


Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares will miss a minimum of three weeks due to an oblique strain, head coach Sheldon Keefe said Tuesday, according to Sportsnet's Luke Fox.

With the Leafs' campaign beginning Oct. 12 against the Montreal Canadiens, the captain is in danger of missing at least the first week of the 2022-23 season.

In his absence, Keefe said the team plans to try Alexander Kerfoot and newcomer Calle Jarnkrok at second-line center.

Myles Garrett released from hospital


Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett was released from a hospital late Monday night after he was injured when he rolled over his Porsche while driving on a rural road following practice.

Garrett suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the one-car wreck. He had been taken to the hospital, along with an unidentified female passenger, after crashing around 3 p.m. — about 2 hours after practice ended.

Garrett's playing status for the upcoming game is unknown. The Browns visit the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Cleveland's players don't practice Tuesday.

LeBron James all time scoring list


LeBron James is staying even-keeled as he looks ahead at likely surpassing Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar atop the NBA's all-time scoring leaderboard this coming season.

"To sit here and to know that I'm on the verge of breaking probably the most sought-after record in the NBA, things that people say would never be done, I think it's just super humbling for myself," the Los Angeles Lakers star told reportersMonday. "I think it's super cool."

Brock Boeser out with hand surgery


Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser will be sidelined for the next three-to-four weeks after undergoing hand surgery, the team announced Monday.

With Vancouver's regular season beginning Oct. 12 against the Edmonton Oilers, Boeser could miss the first two weeks of the 2022-23 campaign. He injured his hand during training camp on Saturday.

Boeser, 25, put up 23 goals and 23 assists in 71 games in 2021-22. Like many Canucks, he saw a boost in production after Bruce Boudreau took over for Travis Green behind the bench on Dec. 5.

Mac Jones suffers severe ankle sprain


Tests confirmed Monday that New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones suffered a "pretty severe" high ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Jones' return timetable is still unclear, but there's hope he won't need surgery, Pelissero adds.

The second-year passer hopped off the field and was in clear pain while being helped to the locker room late versus the Ravens. X-rays on Jones' ankle reportedly came back negative.

Panarin looking for ways to push forward


After leading the New York Rangers and ranking 12th in the league with 96 points last season, Artemi Panarin is asking more of himself.

"Recently I've been focusing more on the wing, and it's easier for everyone else to play with me in that sense," Panarin said through an interpreter Saturday, according to The Athletic's Arthur Staple.

"But I really need to start being everywhere and doing everything. It will help me progress as a player, and it will definitely make it more difficult for the opponent to figure out our game. And it will help my teammates because it was more of a game of throwing the puck down the boards. A really simple game, easy to figure out. And my teammates weren't developing as much as they should."

United States win Presidents Cup


The United States sailed to a 12th Presidents Cup victory Sunday by a score of 17.5-12.5 with Xander Schauffele clinching the winning point.

It's the ninth straight victory for the U.S. in the biennial event.

Jordan Spieth was the first American to score a point for his team Sunday with a 4&3 victory over Australian rookie Cam Davis. It capped an undefeated week at Quail Hollow for the 29-year-old. Patrick Cantlay was next with a 3&2 victory over Adam Scott to inch the team closer to the title.

Rihanna will perform 2023 Super Bowl halftime


Rihanna will take center stage at February's Super Bowl halftime show.

The singer, who declined to perform in the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show out of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, will headline the 2023 Super Bowl, the NFL announced Sunday along with Jay-Z's Roc Nation and Apple Music. Rihanna posted an image on Instagram of an arm outstretched holding an NFL football.

Cleveland closing in on playoff baseball


Cal Quantrill won his career-best 10th consecutive decision, rookie Oscar Gonzalez hit two home runs and the Cleveland Guardians moved closer to clinching the AL Central, beating the Texas Rangers 4-2 on Saturday night.

The Guardians go into Sunday with a magic number of one over the Chicago White Sox to win their first division title since 2018.

Cleveland has won six straight games and 17 of 20.

Zach Wilson due to return Week 4


New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is expected to be cleared by doctors next week, which puts him in line to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Wilson underwent surgery after suffering a meniscus tear and bone bruise during the preseason. Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced Sept. 7 that Wilson would miss at least the first three games of the regular season.

Houston Astros with another 100 win season


The Houston Astros won their 100th game of the 2022 campaign, reaching the century mark for the fourth time in the past six seasons.

Over that span, Houston only missed the 100-win plateau in 2021 when the club won 95 and in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season when teams only played 60 games.

The clinching victory came Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards, with the Astros winning a back-and-forth contest 11-10.

Pelicans sign McCollum


The New Orleans Pelicans and guard CJ McCollum have agreed on a two-year, $64-million contract extension, his agent told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The extension, which will begin at the start of the 2024-25 season, ties McCollum to the Pelicans for a total of four years and $133 million.

McCollum was a key part of New Orleans' late-season surge after being traded from the Portland Trail Blazers midway through the campaign.

Mariners sign Castillo


The Seattle Mariners and right-hander Luis Castillo agreed to a five-year contract extension with player and club options for 2028, the club announced Saturday.

The deal is worth $108 million and could reach $133 million through a sixth-year vesting option, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Tony LaRussa will not return this season


Chicago White Sox skipper Tony La Russa won't manage again this season under advice from doctors following the completion of additional tests and medical procedures, the club announced Saturday.

La Russa took a leave of absence at the end of August because of an unspecified medical issue. He wound up having a pacemaker inserted for his heart.

Dodgers remove Kimbrel from closer role


Craig Kimbrel's tenure as the Los Angeles Dodgers' closer is at least temporarily over as Dave Roberts has pulled the veteran reliever from the role.

The Dodgers will now approach the ninth inning with matchups and use Kimbrel in a different role. Roberts would not commit when asked whether this would extend into the postseason.

Shohei Ohtani reaches 200Ks


Taylor Ward homered twice and Shohei Ohtani took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, helping the Los Angeles Angels beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 on a cool, rainy Friday night.

Ohtani seemed to have trouble adjusting to the weather conditions, tying his career high with six walks. He also hit a batter in the first, when Minnesota scored without a hit, but he managed his way through five-plus innings to earn his fourth straight win.

Ohtani (14-8) allowed two runs and struck out seven to reach 203 Ks on the season, reaching 200 for the first time in his career. He's the first player in MLB history to have 200 strikeouts and hit at least eight home runs in the same season.

Albert Pujols #699 & #700


There is one more member of the 700-home run club. The future Hall of Famer joins Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755), and Barry Bonds (762) in the exclusive fraternity.

St. Louis Cardinals great Albert Pujols is the fourth player in MLB history to reach the momentous plateau, hitting the 700th homer of his storied career off Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Phil Bickfordon Friday. He hit 699 earlier in the same game off left-handed starter Andrew Heaney, one inning earlier.

Cristiano Ronaldo charged with improper conduct


Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with improper conduct for an incident that occurred after Manchester United's defeat at Everton in April, the Football Association announced Friday.

The Portuguese superstar was filmed knocking a supporter's phone to the ground as he walked off the pitch at Goodison Park.

"It is alleged that the forward's conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent," read a statement from the FA.

Barry Bonds wants the Giants to sign Judge


Major League Baseball's home-run king is hoping Aaron Judge brings his power show back home next year.

San Francisco Giants icon Barry Bonds wants his team to make a push for the soon-to-be free agent. Bonds, like Judge, is a Bay Area native and feels the call of home could help lure the superstar away from the New York Yankees.

"I hope he signs here," Bonds, now a special adviser for the Giants, told Sportico's Barry M. Bloom this week. "Can it happen? I don't know. It depends on what the Yankee payroll is. But we would love to have him, I'll tell you that."

Aaron Rodgers shares thoughts on Tom Brady


While Aaron Rodgers has a deep appreciation for what Tom Brady has accomplished during an unparalleled NFL career, he doesn't see himself following the seven-time Super Bowl champion's lead of playing well into his 40s.

"I'll be doing something else. I have a lot of other interests outside the game," Rodgers said, looking ahead to only the fifth head-to-head matchup of teams led by the star quarterbacks, who also are friends off the field.

Clayton Kershaw is planning one more season


Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw doesn't seem ready to hang up his cleats after this season.

"As of now, I haven't really thought a whole lot about next year. But I do think I'm leaning towards playing over not, for sure," Kershaw said, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

The three-time Cy Young winner added: "I hold the right to change my mind, but as of today, I think that I've got at least one more run."

Julio Rodriguez out with back tightness


Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez left Thursday's game against the Oakland Athletics in the first inning with low back tightness, the team announced.

The 21-year-old doubled in his first at-bat to lead off the game, but he departed the field with a trainer in the bottom half of the inning.

Rodriguez was replaced in the lineup by Sam Haggerty, who shifted to left field. Jarred Kelenic moved from left to center.

Patrick Kane off-season noise


Despite being a trending topic for most of the dog days of the offseason, Chicago Blackhawks superstar Patrick Kane says he hasn't paid much attention to swirling trade rumors.

Kane is entering the final year of his contract while Chicago is set to embark on a potentially lengthy rebuild, leading to plenty of speculation about his availability.

Will Ryan Ellis join the Flyers this season


Philadelphia Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher doesn't anticipate that star defenseman Ryan Ellis will play this coming season.

"No timetable for his return to play," Fletcher said Thursday, according to Philly Hockey Now's Sam Carchidi. "I'll just say, my assumption is he won't play this season. If he does, it'll be a bonus."

Ellis is dealing with a multi-layered injury in the middle of his body and was limited to four games in his 2021-22 debut season with the Flyers. Fletcher acknowledged the 31-year-old's ailment could be career-ending, according to The Athletic's Charlie O'Connor.

Ime Udoka suspended


Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka will likely be suspended for the entire 2022-23 season due to his consensual relationship with a female staff member, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

A formal announcement on the decision is expected as soon as Thursday.

Udoka's job reportedly isn't believed to be in jeopardy.

Jacob Chychrun wants to be traded


Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun still wants to be traded to a playoff contender. He's not going to let that impact how he plays while he's still in the desert.

"I've been here a while now and the way I operate and take care of my business, I try to get better every day," Chychrun said Wednesday, a day before the Coyotes start training camp. "All I'm going to focus on is continuing to get better, get healthy — that's obviously the biggest thing right now."

Bobby Hart suspended for punching Titans coach


The NFL suspended Buffalo Bills backup offensive lineman Bobby Hart for one game on Tuesday, a day after he took a swing at a Titans player and instead struck a Tennessee coach in the head following a 41-7 win.

Hart was suspended without pay for unsportsmanlike conduct and won't be eligible to rejoin the team until after Buffalo plays at Miami on Sunday.

Atlanta Braves clinch playoffs


The Atlanta Braves are heading to the postseason for a fifth consecutive season after defeating the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Tuesday.

The Braves didn't partake in any sort of celebration, as they continue to target the Mets for top spot in the National League East.

Los Angeles Dodgers icon Maury Wills, the first player in modern major-league history to steal 100 bases in a season, died Monday at age 89.

Frankie Montas out with shoulder injury


The New York Yankees are losing one of their big trade-deadline acquisitions right as another returns.

New York placed right-hander Frankie Montas on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Tuesday. Montas' IL stint is retroactive to Sept. 17. The team reinstated outfielder Harrison Bader from the 60-day IL in a corresponding roster move.

Zdeno Chara is finally hanging up his skates.

Veteran defenseman Zdeno Chara announced his retirement Tuesday after 24 seasons in the NHL. The 45-year-old will sign a one-day contract later Tuesday to retire as a member of the Boston Bruins, his team for 14 seasons.

P.K. Subban announces his retirement


Longtime defenseman P.K. Subban is ending his NHL tenure, he announced Tuesday.

The 33-year-old won the Norris Trophy in 2013 and played his final three campaigns with the New Jersey Devils after three seasons with the Nashville Predators and parts of seven with the Montreal Canadiens to begin his career.

In June, Subban claimed the King Clancy Trophy in recognition of his leadership and humanitarian contributions, particularly his commitment to social justice and COVID-19 relief. He was a finalist for the honor three other times.

Avalanche sign MacKinnon to 8 Year contract


The Colorado Avalanche inked superstar center Nathan MacKinnon to an eight-year contract extension Tuesday.

MacKinnon's new deal carries an average annual value of $12.6 million, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The pact will make MacKinnon the highest-paid NHL player when it begins in 2023-24. Edmonton Oilers dynamo Connor McDavid currently holds that distinction with a contract carrying a $12.5-million AAV. McDavid signed his eight-year deal in 2017.

Rangers trade Lundkvist to Dallas Stars


The New York Rangers traded defenseman Nils Lundkvist to the Dallas Stars for a conditional first-round pick in 2023 and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2025.

If the Stars' 2023 first-round pick is in the top 10, the Rangers will receive their 2024 first-rounder. Furthermore, if Lunkdvist accumulates 55 points over the next two seasons, the fourth-round pick becomes a third-rounder.

Lundkvist, the 28th overall pick in 2018, requested a trade out of New York last week.
